Dear Diary:

Today I discovered exclaim2 a fascinating treasure!treasure3

I was stealthily slip-sliding along the wood flooring woodflooring2

of a cozy cabin Cabin  on Trask Mountainmountains

when I found an old antique trunk AntiqueTrunk

with a torn hole hole  just big enough

to squeeze through.

And there it was!  pointingfinger2

a dusty captain’s captain2  leather-bound ship's  log!  book

with fancy penmanship Quill entry

for Scottish  ScotlandOutline3 businessman reid6

who settled here in Dundee, Oregon  usacolor100

from Dundee, Scotland.dundee

This reminded me of my sixteenth-generation  treeblackBack

grandfather’s tall tales of our family's Irish exile

from the cold cold2 ancestral barn shed10 at Ballycastle:

stowed away on a boat boatto Rathlin Island;

floating aboard a catamaran Catamaran3 to Machrihanish;

over to Campbeltown by rugged wagon;  WagonsHo

castaway to the Isle of Arran on a rickety rig;  Raft21

hauled to Irvine in a saddlebag;  LeatherBag10

across land by mule  mule through Glasgow to Perth;

and arriving at long last in watery  lake Dundee.

How grandfather wriggled  snake

into William Reid’s luggage  luggage

is an epic tome for another day.  calendar

But now I recount his fond memories

of time spent among the heather,  heather10

before he sailed here to America.america

I feel inspired to play his bagpipes  bagpipes100

and sing a song  songbird

of life in this new world  Earth10  of Oregon.

Slithering Bagpipes ©Amy R. Laurence, All Rights Reserved

I'm a slithering serpent from Scotland

From the Eastern seaport of Dundee,

Where the lassies and lads

Wear their wool tartan plaids

And the sky is as blue as can be.

Oh, the moon on the moor in the gloamin'

Makes a snake play a bagpipe with glee!

I'm a slithering serpent from Scotland,

And I hope you will play bagpipes with me.

From the outskirts of Perth to the Highlands,

Where the Firth of Tay goes to the sea,

And the jute is well made,

And the fruit marmalade

Is as sweet as the start of the day.

Oh, the moon on the moor in the gloamin'

Makes a snake play a bagpipe with glee!

I'm a slithering serpent from Scotland,

And I hope you will play bagpipes with me.
